Holiday Travel and Your CPAP

The holiday season is here, and for many that means traveling to spend time with friends and family. Whether you’re flying or driving, CPAP users will find a unique set of obstacles during their travels. But with the right preparation and knowledge, you and your CPAP can travel with ease.

  • Bring a portable CPAP machine.

Just like other forms of technology, CPAP machines have been getting smaller over time. However, the most compact ones are those made for travel. Because of their smaller size, travel CPAP machines are also easier to use in the compact space of a plane, car or hotel room. Some of them even have a DC mobile adapter added to them, so you can plug in while your partner drives.

  • You cannot be prevented from using your CPAP machine on the plane.

Make sure you alert your flight staff that you will require the use of a CPAP machine if you’re on an overnight flight. Since it is a medical device, you legally cannot be denied the use of your CPAP machine. However, many airlines only offer outlets in business or first class sections of the plane, so plan accordingly.

  • The TSA will likely examine your CPAP machine for explosives.

This is what’s known as an ETD, or Explosive Trace Detection. TSA officials will run a white cotton swab over the surface of your machine and test it for traces of explosives. Most TSA officials have seen a CPAP machine come through their line before, so it’s doubtful they will give you much trouble. Just like a laptop, you can leave all your supplies in the bag while they examine the machine itself.

While you may be tempted to skip out on your sleep apnea therapy during the holidays, CPAP Central encourages you to stay compliant. Without your CPAP machine, you may find yourself falling asleep during family gatherings or being short with those around you. At some point, almost everyone has to spend some time away from home. Whether it’s for a vacation, a business trip, visiting family or friends, many of us will spend a night away from home at some point or another. For those with sleep apnea, this requires some extra thinking to make sure your CPAP therapy can continue even when you are away from home.

CPAPCentral.com has a solution to make sure you can keep up with your CPAP therapy, no matter where you are: The Z1™ Travel CPAP Machine. This machine comes in several different models, all featuring a lightweight, easy-to-transport design, providing you the CPAP therapy you need. Let us take you through a brief description of each of the Z1 models.

The Z1™ Travel CPAP Machine

Weighing just 10 ounces and sitting at 6.5 inches long, the Z1™ takes up about as much space as your cell phone when placed in your luggage. Designed to operate quietly, the machine produces about 26 dBA, about the same as a whisper. The machine also features three pressure relief settings using the Z-Breathe™ Pressure Relief technology.

The Z1™ Unplugged Travel CPAP System

Keep your CPAP machine running on the road, even when you’re away from a power outlet. The Z1™ Unplugged has a small battery built right into the machine, and gives up to eight hours of battery life when running without a cord. The PowerShell™ allows your machine and battery to securely fit together while remaining easy to carry.

The Z1™ Auto Travel CPAP Machine

Don’t worry about manually adjusting your pressure for your CPAP therapy with the Z1™ Auto. Combining the portability and lightweight design of the original Z1™, the Z1™ Auto features auto-adjusting technology, meaning the machine will do the job of adjusting the air pressure for you. This machine can also be synced to the Nitelog™ mobile app.

The Z1™ Auto Unplugged Travel CPAP System

The Z1™ Auto Unplugged gives you a lot of options for your CPAP therapy when traveling. Capable of automatically adjusting your CPAP air pressure, as well as operating on batter power, you can take the Z1™ Auto Unplugged anywhere and make sure your therapy stays on track. Traveling with Your CPAP Machine

There are several things you need to consider when traveling with your CPAP machine.

There are several things you need to consider when traveling with your CPAP machine.

Spring Break season may be over, but travel season has just begun. Your next trip could be a vacation with your family, a weekend getaway for yourself, or a business trip. No matter your reason for traveling, CPAPCentral.com wants to make sure you’re prepared.

If you have sleep apnea, you will likely be traveling with your CPAP machine. This means going through some extra steps, especially for air travel. We don’t want you to be held up or miss your flight because your CPAP machine is being checked by security screeners. With that in mind, CPAPCentral.com brings you these tips for flying with your CPAP machine.

Be Prepared: Get to the Airport Early

Because of your CPAP machine, it’s going to take you longer to get through security than many other air travelers. Your machine goes through not only a visual inspection by airport security, but will also be x-rayed.  If you want to make sure to keep your CPAP machine clean, you can place it in a clear plastic bag when it is being x-rayed.  You can also request that the security screener wear gloves during the inspection.  While it is not required, it can be helpful to have a note of medical necessity from your doctor, as well as your CPAP prescription on hand, for easier passage through security.  To ensure that you’re not late for your flight, arrive at the airport at least two hours early. It’s also wise to call the airline you’re flying with in the days leading up the flight to let them know you will be flying with your CPAP machine.

Carry Your CPAP in Your Carry-on

There are several small, lightweight CPAP machines that are manufactured specifically for travel. These machines are small enough to store in your carry-on luggage, guaranteeing you always know where your machine is. This eliminates the worry of your machine disappearing if your other luggage is lost or misplaced. If your CPAP machine is in a checked bag that gets lost, contact the airline directly.

Using Your CPAP Machine During The Flight

We’ve all been on those long flights. Whether it’s a cross-country flight, an international flight, or you’re catching the red eye, there are times when you need to sleep on a plane. Because it is medical equipment, you are permitted to use your CPAP machine during the flight, but you’ll need a special adapter to connect with the plane’s outlets.  You may also need to be seated in business or first class, in order to have access to these outlets.  Check with you airline to be sure.  You can also use battery-operated travel CPAP machines like the Z1™ Unplugged Travel CPAP System.

CPAPCentral.com wants you to be prepared for flying with your CPAP machine. We carry several models of travel CPAP machines, along with masks and other accessories to make sure you’re comfortable in the air.
